The waterfall lies on the historic county boundary between the North Riding of Yorkshire on the south bank, and County Durham on the north bank, since 1974, the location has been called Teesdale. The largest waterfall in the UK by volume of water. Due to the high concentration of iron oxide in the surrounding geology it look like a fall of rich amber ale.
